Ventenata

BACKGROUND: Introduced from Eurasia, ventenata occurs in grain crops, rangeland, and on disturbed sites. The seeds resemble wild oat seeds, with the bent awn. Once the panicles emerge, cattle will not graze it.Â
DESCRIPTION: A winter annual grass that grows 6 inches to 2 feet tall. Seedlings have narrow leaves that are folded or rolled inward. Stems have reddish-black joints. Tan seed heads are produced in loose, branching clusters.
CONTROL: Effective control options are limited. Mowing may be effective if performed multiple times throughout the season. Fall applications of herbicides can also be effective.
